Maple Syrup Festival

Friday was an incredibly SWEET day... it was Jackman's Maple Syrup Festival once again.    Over the last several weeks, we harvested more than 200L of sap from Jackman's maple trees.   And we've been 'sugaring off' all week.   We had lots of tasty maple syrup to share.  You know what that means... Pancakes for EVERYONE!   Here are some pics of our the big event...

Earth Hour

On Friday afternoon, we celebrated Earth Hour at Jackman.  It started with an Earth Hour Parade.   Hundreds of Jackman kids marched around the neighbourhood with Earth Hour posters and chants. It was fun.  It was noisy.  It was effective.

Earth Hour continued inside our school, as we turned off our school and classroom lights (and other electronics) from 2 - 3 pm.   Some classes took the challenge to go powerless all afternoon.

Our goal - to encourage families and others in our community to participate in Earth Hour on Saturday night (8:30 - 9:00).  People all around the world will be joining Jackman families as they power down for an hour on Saturday night.   It is an important reminder about conserving energy.   Wlll your family participate in Saturday's Earth Hour?

Earth Hour is just one hour.  What about the other 8759 hours in the year?   (Note:  We did the math...  365 days x 24hours = 8760 hours).  Does one hour really make a difference?  We say, YES!   Earth Hour, while just being one hour, encourages everyone to think and talk about energy conservation.   It's a friendly reminder to make a change.   To take some action.  To re-commit to turning off lights and other electronics as much as possible.

It's Time For... MAPLE SYRUP

Here's some BIG news...

We’ve collected more than 200 L of maple sap from Jackman’s maple trees.  Wow!   That’s a lot of sap.  Twice as much as last year. Thank you to teachers and kids in rooms 209, 211, 102, 313, P1, P2 and 201 – you have become our sap collecting experts. Check out our sap collection journal  Sap Collection!

And now for some BIGGER news…

On Friday, we’ll be ‘sugaring’ at Jackman.   We will be boiling the sap down throughout the day to make… MAPLE SYRUP. :-)

You are invited to drop by to see our maple syrup making in action and to taste this sweet treat for yourself.  Maybe stay for a few minutes to learn about making maple syrup.  We're excited about providing Jackman with this unique 'outdoor education’ experience.

Darwin is already ‘sugaring’ (in his backyard).  Rolf is sugaring too.   We’ll have lots of maple syrup ready for tasting.  Also, a number of Jackman parent volunteers are making small pancakes to pair with our freshly made maple syrup.  There will be pancakes for EVERYONE!   Yeah!  And there’s nearly 700 kids at Jackman… that’s a lot of pancakes.   We could use a few more pancake making chefs.   Are you up for the job?   Let us know.

Earth Hour

Hey Jackman!  One of our favourite Eco celebrations is coming soon, and we want you to prepare for it!   It's EARTH HOUR!!!

On Friday March 24, we want the whole school to turn off the lights and power down electronic devices for the whole afternoon (or at least between 2:00 and 3:00).   Maybe your teachers will plan something special to do in the 'dark'.   There are lots of fun and interesting ways to learn without power.

Maybe your class can join us for our Earth Hour Parade!  Wear blue and green on Friday, bring any homemade signs and noisemakers, and meet us at the back of the school at 1:00.   We'll take a short walk around the block.  Together we'll spread the word about Earth Hour to our community!

Oh, and don’t forget to tell your friends and family about Global Earth Hour, which takes place the next day, on Saturday March 25, 8:30 - 9:30.  Find out more about Earth hour here...

Help us shine a light on conserving energy!  You can do it, Jackman! Thanks, Ainsley, Jonah, Natalie, Ollie and Shaugnessy (The JETs)
